Throughout the month of April, 8th grade students took part in several community-based projects. One such project was a local advocacy project concerning a building at 395 Main Street in Malone, New York. This building is quite unstable and in danger of falling into the river on which it overlooks--the Salmon River. The community has come together to make a plan for this building since the main sewer artery for the Village of Malone passes underneath this building as well. If this building should fall (which local engineers from Beardsley and Associates have projected), one unfortunate result would be the polluting of the Salmon River with local waste. Students spent time in April researching this local issue, meeting with Mr. John MacArthur (an engineer at Beardsley and Associates), and writing letters to local, state and national leaders making them aware of environmental impact that the local area would face should 395 Main Street fall on the river and sewer line below. At Academic Showcase this year, students in 7th grade U.S. History displayed an interactive American Revolution timeline using a Comic Strip creation app in combination with an augmented reality tool, Aurasma. Each comic strip became an interactive learning experience when scanned with the Aurasma app!
In 8th Grade U.S. History students displayed their National Park comic strip projects. Students used Visual Poetry to show what they know about the United States National Park System.

2015 Trip to the Source of the Blue Nile River
On Apriil 8, 2015, students at the Malone Middle School will engage in a Skype conversation with students at the International School of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia about their trip to the source of the Blue Nile River in Africa. Students from the International School will discuss the Village Life, Culture and History, as well as the geography of the region including Lake Tana (the source of the Blue Nile), and Bahir Dar City on Lake Tana. In 8th grade U.S. History classes this week students have been learning about the causes and culture of World War I. On Friday, students will take part in a station activity that will require students to interact with a variety of sources to explore the causes and culture of World War I. Below is a video clip about life in the trenches during World War I.
An Introduction to Comic Life for 7th Grade Social Studies
This week in Social Studies class students will be researching a battle from the American Revolution, and creating a comic strip about the battle. Students will use the Comic Life app on their iPads to create a comic strip about their battle. Below is an introduction to the week from me, as well as a video tutorial about how to use the Comic Life app! Students will watch both videos on Monday, February 23rd.

Welcome back from the break everyone! Please watch the video below for an overview of the week. Students will be finishing theNational Park Word Clouds using the Visual Poetry App this week, and then they will be learning about the U.S. gaining power and new territories around the world! While students are finishing up the National Park project on Monday, they will also be watching/listening to the Panama Canal Video below!
