An Introduction to Comic Life for 7th Grade Social Studies

This week in Social Studies class students will be researching a battle from the American Revolution, and creating a comic strip about the battle. Students will use the Comic Life app on their iPads to create a comic strip about their battle. Below is an introduction to the week from me, as well as a video tutorial about how to use the Comic Life app! Students will watch both videos on Monday, February 23rd.

8th Grade Objectives for the Week of February 23rd

Welcome back from the break everyone! Please watch the video below for an overview of the week. Students will be finishing theNational Park Word Clouds using the Visual Poetry App this week, and then they will be learning about the U.S. gaining power and new territories around the world! While students are finishing up the National Park project on Monday, they will also be watching/listening to the Panama Canal Video below!

Students will begin class on Tuesday, February 24th with a quick tutorial regarding how to find images in Google Images that are available for them to use. The images are "labeled for reuse" in Google, and students may use them for their Comic Life American Revolution projects.

8th Grade U.S. History

This week in Mrs. Hesseltine's U.S. History Lab, students will be evaluating the issues of the Progressive Reform Era through the lense of numerous primary sources. The schedule for this week is as follows:


Monday: Watch what you eat! Today we will read Chapter 14 of The book, "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair in iBooks.  Students will focus on how the author appeals to our 5 senses in describing the meat industry during the early 1900's. Students will be asked to list the words that the author uses that hit upon our sense of smell, sight, and hearing.

Tuesday: Students will evaluate two conflicting views on suffrage as expressed in the political cartoons below.
Wednesday: Students will organize the issues and solutions of the Progressive Reform Era using a mind mapping iPad app (Bubbl.Us) Students will learn about some of the legislation that was enacted in an effort to address the societal issues of the early 20th Century.

Thursday: Today students will take part in an activity whereby students will be asked to match the early 20th Century issues to their Progressive Reform counterpart. Students will evaluate several reform-era pieces of legislation and decide which issue is being addressed. 


Friday: Students will be evaluated on their knowledge of the Progressive Reform Era via an Edmodo quiz. Students will then focus on current events issues.
