Animating U.S. Expansion to the West
While attending the TEDYouth Conference in November, I had the opportunity to spend a day of professional development with the TED-Ed animation team at the TED offices in New York City. I was so excited to bring everything that I learned about animation back to my students at the Malone Middle School. Over the past few weeks students have been learning about the movement of people to the Western United States throughout the mid to late 1800s, and the consequences of that movement. Students have focused on historical topics while learning about cause and effect and compare and contrast. While learning about this period in U.S. History students have also been learning about the art of animation. Student groups in each 8th grade U.S. History class have been creating gif (short stop-motion) animations to share with the class, and the world! Below are some examples of student work:
