8th Grade Social Studies
We have also been looking at life for immigrants living and working on the inner cities of America. In the coming weeks, we will continue to look at the injustices and inequalities in American society throughout the early 20th Century--such issues as the lack of oversight within the food industry (specifically the meat industry), labor in the United States and the formation of labor unions, the fight for voting rights for women, among other problems and solutions.
Next week students will be reading excerpts from the book, "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. Students will also be looking at political cartoons, and photographs by photo-journalists of the time period. Students will focus on the problems, solutions, and life today with respect to these same issues.
On another note, last weekend I took a little trek to New York City and had the opportunity to see Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Below is a brief video clip of some of the sights--including the Stairs of Separation at Ellis Island!
